Scope of Role
The School Medical Officer is a member of the Burgmann Anglican School Professional and Operational Staff with responsibility in ensuring the health needs of our children and students are met, while supporting the integration of compliance, risk management, and operational efficiency across the School.
Role Responsibility
Working Relationships: The Medical Officer will work closely with the Deputy Principal (Student Engagement) to ensure health needs of students are met. They will also work closely with the Chief Operating Officer ensuring compliance and risk management standards are met. The Health Officer will also work closely with the reception staff on both campuses to ensure best practice for students.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Deliver proficient medical care from minor conditions to emergencies, including cuts, abrasions, fractures, asthma attacks, mental health concerns and anaphylaxis, while effectively managing diverse student needs
- Maintain legal documentation for all treatments performed, ensuring compliance with regulations and protocols
- Collaborate with stakeholders to develop comprehensive action plans for specific student medical conditions like anaphylaxis, diabetes, epilepsy, and severe allergies
- Demonstrate strong communication and liaison skills with staff, parents/caregivers, students, doctors, and specialists to address medical conditions related to students, coordinating external tests and procedures as needed
- Precisely calculate and safely administer medications and other preparations to students following proper protocols
- Ensure familiarisation with Burgmann Anglican School policies and procedures to maintain a secure and compliant healthcare environment
- Advocate for the health and safety of children and young people in a culturally sensitive and safe manner
- Proactively conduct educational programs for individuals, staff, and students in emergency treatment and healthcare management, promoting preventive health practices
- Support school activities (e.g., sports days, camps/retreats) after consulting with relevant stakeholders
- Provide training to staff on various health-related topics, advising on management plans and procedures for medical emergencies
- Offer expert advice and guidance to the School on childhood illnesses and infectious disease management and control
- Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in the Medical Office, implementing strategies for enhancements
- Efficiently manage medical supplies and medications, ensuring the upkeep and organisation of First Aid kits and maintaining the tidiness and cleanliness of storage areas, regularly sanitising surfaces
- Uphold the Medical Office as a secure, confidential, and non-judgmental environment for students, parents/caregivers and staff
- Maintain accurate student medical information and records in collaboration with relevant staff
- Maintain and update student medical alert lists and distribute them to staff as required
- Complete incident reports when necessary for students, staff, and visitors, including following up post incident, conducting thorough assessments to determine potential preventability
- Ensure records of medical equipment and supplies (including location) are current, arranging appropriate servicing when needed
- Coordinate health screening programs with relevant bodies to promote preventive healthcare practices
- Attend professional learning to maintain registration
- Compile and generate data and reports as required
- Be available for recall for after-hours emergency situations, providing advisory support as needed, with potential on-site attendance required in certain circumstances
